More than 75,000 persons were affected by the Tesla Inc. data breach in May, which also involved employee records and was the result of “insider wrongdoing,” according to a notice published by the Maine Attorney General’s office on Friday.
Nine Mainers were among the 75,735 people who were impacted by the data breach. The individuals appear to be current or previous workers of the automaker with its headquarters in Austin, Texas.
According to a copy of a letter sent by Tesla to people affected on August 18 and included with the data breach notification, “A foreign media outlet (named Handelsblatt) informed the company on May 10, 2023 that it had obtained confidential information.”

Two Former Tesla Employees leaked the Data:
The inquiry found that two former Tesla workers had taken the material and shared it with the media outlet in breach of Tesla’s IT security and data protection regulations.
The letter continues by stating that the company sued the two ex-employees, although it doesn’t say in which court. According to the letter, the litigation resulted in the confiscation of electronic devices that were thought to have carried company information. The Company also obtained court orders that, subject to criminal penalties, forbid the former workers from using, accessing, or disseminating the data in any other way. “Tesla worked with law enforcement and outside forensics experts, and it will keep acting appropriately as needed,” the statement reads.
The company’s data privacy officer, Steven Elentukh, did not immediately reply to a request for comment sent through email on Sunday. The letter continues by stating that Tesla sued the two ex-employees, although it doesn’t say in which court. According to the letter, the litigation resulted in the confiscation of electronic devices that were thought to have carried company information.
