Here’s how you can build a capsule wardrobe for any season

Worried about the problem of organizing your wardrobe?

Then, you are at the right place. In this article, we’ll teach you how to build a capsule wardrobe.

A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of interchangeable complimentary pieces that are classic and timeless. This collection allows you to create multiple looks from the same pieces of clothing.

Riecha Mallick, assistant professor of fashion styling at Pearl Academy, explained capsule wardrobes are important as “people are increasingly falling victim to the ever-changing trends, which leads to overspending, hoarding, and many pieces never seeing the light of day.” Building a capsule wardrobe ensures nothing goes unused or unworn though the biggest challenge will be to let go of certain pieces, she said.

Trends come and go, but a capsule wardrobe will keep you from sighing in despair because you don’t have anything to wear every time you need to step out. “The whole idea is to be able to always look dressed as per the requirement with a limited number of pieces that never go out of fashion. Remember what designer Yves Saint Laurent said, ‘Fashion fades but style is eternal’,” Mallick added.

Here are tips to build a capsule wardrobe, according to Mallick:

1. Start by identifying your shades

You could be someone who enjoys wearing neutral shades, or you might mostly dabble with pastel colors. Or you could be someone with an eclectic sense of style that doesn’t change with time, trends, seasons, or occasion. That’s just who you are and how you describe your personal style. So, knowing these shades is a huge plus.

2. Do an audit of your wardrobe

Declutter. Let go of things that you don’t wear, don’t love, or a color you don’t like or that doesn’t fit. But have a sustainable approach and donate, recycle, or sell to thrift stores. We don’t want to further increase junk in the landfill.

3. Have a few classic pieces

Say now neutral shades are your vibe — it will help give a starting point from where you can start building your wardrobe with classic, versatile pieces in those shades. Some must-haves would be — three to four neutral-colored T-shirts, one or two pairs of jeans, classic black trousers, a black dress that you can tone up or down as per the occasion, two jackets — one could be a classic vintage piece and one could be a denim everyday look. You can also have a co-ord set or three-piece set that can be used creatively as separates.
