Too much insulin can be as dangerous as too little – 2023

Michael Karin, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology and Pathology at UC San Diego School of Medicine said that “Although insulin is one of the most essential hormones, whose insufficiency can result in death, too much insulin level can also be deadly.”

Insulin is the most critical treatment for type 1 diabetes. But, in some cases, it is also useful the type 2 diabetic patients.

While our body finely tunes insulin production, patients who are treated with drugs for maintaining their sugar level often experience hypoglycemia. It is a serious medical condition and results in seizures, coma, and even death when left unrecognized and untreated. It defines a condition called electric shock.

Hypoglycemia is referred to as low blood sugar and it is the most common cause of death among diabetic patients.

Our body contains a metabolic enzyme called fructose -1,6-bisphosphate phosphatase or FBP1 which is the also safety valve of the human body. It controls the synthesis of glucose in the body during sleep and secretes it to maintain a steady supply of glucose in the bloodstream.  It also lowers the risk of insulin shock.

But in certain cases, the body is not able to produce the required glucose. And thus, the deficiency in FBP1 can result in severe hypoglycemia.

Types of insulin and ways to maintain the insulin level in the body.

The three main groups of insulin are Fast-acting, Intermediate-acting, and Long-acting insulin. There are various ways to maintain the insulin level in a diabetic patient.

Insulin injection is given to the person as advised by the doctor. Nowadays, people are using insulin pens to inject insulin for people who have diabetes. Also, some little efforts like consuming fennel seeds can help in maintaining the insulin level in the body. It lowers blood sugar levels and increases insulin reactivity resulting in balancing the sugar.
