Bilkis Bano ‘relieved’ but ‘fight not over yet’: Family after Supreme Court verdict

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to quash the August 15, 2022 remission and premature release granted to the 11 convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case, Bilkis is “relieved but not victorious”, sources close to the family told.

Sources said that the family was “relieved” that the Supreme Court upheld their petition challenging the Gujarat government’s jurisdiction in granting remission.

However, the family declined to comment further, awaiting the court proceedings to close.

A source close to Bilkis said, “The SC order has reinstated our faith in the judiciary and it gives us consolation that justice is alive… But, we cannot feel victorious yet as the convicts will prepare to apply for remission from the other state… There is a doubt in our minds at the moment if the court will consider the plea of the convicts to remain outside prison while applying for remission. It seems like the fight is not over yet until they are sent back to jail.”

The source also added that Bilkis and her family have lived at an undisclosed location since remission was granted to the convicts in August 2022.
