Iran attacks Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu’s war cabinet in favour of ‘hitting back’, but…

Israel’s War Cabinet convened on Sunday but refrained from making decisions regarding their next steps, according to an official. The world anxiously awaited any indication of escalation following Iran’s launch of over 300 missiles and drones, marking the first instance of such an attack from Iranian soil.

Israeli leaders praised an international military coalition for aiding in thwarting a direct Iranian assault involving hundreds of drones and missiles, dubbing the coordinated response the beginning of a “strategic alliance” against Tehran. On Monday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces, supported by US European Command destroyers, had neutralized over 80 one-way attack unmanned aerial vehicles (OWA UAV) and at least six ballistic missiles intended for Israel from Iran and Yemen on April 13 and 14.

The Israeli military reported a 99 percent interception success rate and no casualties, despite prior indications from Iran of the attack. Iran claimed to have achieved its objective of temporarily halting the path towards a broader conflict. US and European allies on Sunday urged restraint and cautioned against further escalation in their statements.

Statement of Israeli Chief Spokesperson

The chief spokesperson Rear Admiral, Daniel Hagari said the country remained on high alert and is assessing the situation. “Over the last few hours we approved operational plans for both offensive and defensive action,” Daniel Hagari said in a televised statement.

The Iranian attack on Saturday, less than two weeks after a suspected Israeli strike in Syria that killed two Iranian generals in an Iranian consular building, marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
