Ken Block, a professional rally driver who co-founded Hoonigan and DC Shoes and revolutionised action sports marketing and motorsports filmmaking, passed away on Monday in a snowmobile accident close to his Utah home. He was 55.
Block’s death is confirmed by Hoonigan Industries in a statement shared on its social media pages.
Block was operating the snowmobile in Wasatch County, Utah, according to the paperwork. Block was travelling down a slope when the snowmobile overturned and fell on top of him, according to the Sheriff’s office. The statement reads, “He was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.” Although he was riding with others, the accident happened to him alone.
Who was Ken Block?
In 2015, Ken Block started his career in rallying. In the Rally America Championship, he received the Rookie of the Year award. He also participated in the World Rally Championship. He also took home multiple medals for RallyCross at the X Games.
In 1984, he additionally helped launch the skateboard company DC Shoes. Block also went from being a marketing executive to becoming one of the most recognizable figures in motorsports after selling the business in 2004. He also became a podium danger in the World Rally and Rally America just five years after he began his career. In RallyCross, he has won five X Games medals.
The first 10 Gymkhana films were put on YouTube by Ken Block in 2008, and they quickly got viral. The videos were unique in that Ken Block basically performed driving stunts, drifted, and artistically interacted with his surroundings. More than a billion people have watched the films since they became viral online. The Hoonigan YouTube channel rose to become the most well-known motorsports channel ever.
