Modernizing Railway Station: An Initiative by PM Modi

PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Chennai Egmore, Rameswaram, Katpadi, Kanyakumari, and Madurai railway stations in Tamil Nadu in May 2022. In June, he laid the foundation stones for the redevelopment of Udhna, Surat, Somnath, and Sabarmati railway stations in Gujarat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Secunderabad Railway Station in Telangana on Saturday.

The redevelopment of Secunderabad Railway Station will be done at a cost of Rs 720 crore. It will undergo a massive makeover with world-class amenities and with an iconic building.

Following the foundation laying ceremony, PM Modi tweeted that it would be an important infrastructure upgradation project which will benefit countless people.

The station will have a double-level spacious roof plaza with all passenger amenities in one place after redevelopment. And it will also have multimodal connectivity for providing seamless transfer of passengers from rail to other modes among others.

PrevLet us drill down a little more into it and see different initiatives taken by PM Modi in Railways.

In July 2021, the PM inaugurated the redeveloped Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station. Then in November 2021, he earmarked to the nation the redeveloped Kamalapati Station in Bhopal.

In May 2022, he laid the foundation for the redevelopment of Chennai Egmore, Rameswaram, and Kanyakumari railway stations in Tamil Nadu. Also, he laid the floor stones of the Katpadi and Madurai stations in the same month. In June, he laid the floor stones for the redevelopment of Udhna, Surat, Somnath, and Sabarmati stations in Gujarat.

He also laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Bengaluru Cantt and Yesvantpur stations in Karnataka in the same month. Alongside, Sir M Visvesvaraya Railway Station known as India’s first Air Conditioned Railway Station at Baiyappanahalli was developed on the lines of a modern airport.

Further, in July 2022, Modi laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of the Ranchi railway station in Jharkhand. Also in September 2022, Modi laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Ernakulam, Ernakulam Town, and Kollam stations in Kerala. The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi approved the redevelopment of the New Delhi and Ahmedabad terminus in the same month.

In November 2022, the PM laid the floor stone for the redevelopment of Vishakhapatnam and Andhra Pradesh stations. He laid the foundation stones for the redevelopment of Nagpur station. And Ajni (Nagpur) railway stations in Maharashtra and New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal in December 2022.

In January 2023, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Maharashtra. PM dedicated the redeveloped Belagavi Railway Station building to the nation in Karnataka in February 2023.

In March, PM Modi dedicated the longest railway platform in the world at Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Hubballi Terminus, Karnataka.
