Special Session to debate Parliament’s 75-year journey; CEC, other bills on govt agenda

The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Appointment Bill is listed on the government’s agenda for Parliament’s special session starting September 19. Parliament’s journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha is also on the agenda.

Three other bills listed on the agenda are – The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, and the Post Office Bill.

“Members are informed that on 18th September 2023, besides other formal business like laying of papers, etc., a discussion will be held on the subject ‘Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories and Learnings’,” the Lok Sabha bulletin reads.

The discussion on the parliamentary journey will be held in an old building, thereafter the new building could become operational, sources said.

Reacting to the government’s agenda, Congress’ Jairam Ramesh said finally the government has finally announced the agenda. “I am sure the legislative grenades are being kept up their sleeves to be unleashed at the last moment as usual. Parde ke peeche kuch aur hai! Regardless, the INDIA parties will steadfastly oppose the insidious CEC Bill,” Ramesh posted on X.

All-Party Meet on Sunday

Earlier in the day, the government announced a meeting of the floor leaders of all political parties on September 17, parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi said. The invitation for the meeting has been sent to all concerned leaders through email, he said.
