Operation Mahadev: Pahalgam attack mastermind among 3 terrorists killed

NEW DELHI: In a significant breakthrough, the Indian Army’s elite Para Commandos neutralized three terrorists during an encounter on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday.

According to officials cited by news agency PTI, one of the slain militants has been identified as Sulieman, also known as Asif, believed to be the mastermind behind the April 22 Pahalgam attack. The trio was eliminated during a surprise operation carried out by security forces, codenamed ‘Operation Mahadev.’

The other two terrorists were identified as Jibran and Hamza Afghani. Jibran was reportedly linked to the Sonamarg Tunnel attack in October 2024.

Security personnel recovered one M4 carbine rifle, two AK-series rifles, and other ammunition from the encounter site.

Following the operation, additional reinforcements were deployed in the area based on intelligence inputs suggesting the presence of another terrorist group nearby.

The bodies of the deceased were handed over to the local police, who assisted in the identification and are completing legal formalities and final rites in accordance with standard operating procedure.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Zone), VK Birdi, described Operation Mahadev as a “long-drawn operation.”

Earlier, the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps confirmed in a post on X that three terrorists were killed during the anti-terror operation.
