Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party secured a surprising victory in Monday’s (April 28, 2025) federal election, marking a dramatic political comeback driven in part by rising concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s annexation threats and trade conflict.
Addressing supporters in Ottawa after the win, Mr. Carney emphasized the need for national unity in response to escalating tensions with the United States. He reiterated a key campaign message, declaring the post–World War II era of mutual cooperation between Canada and the U.S. to be over. “We are past the shock of America’s betrayal, but the lessons must stay with us,” he stated.
Initial projections showed the Liberals winning more seats in the 343-member Parliament than the Conservatives. However, it remained uncertain whether they had secured an outright majority or would require support from smaller parties to govern effectively.
