Bangladesh News Highlights: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position amid violent protests in the country. She was airlifted from the capital as a mob stormed the prime minister’s palace on Monday evening. As protesters celebrated her resignation, the Bangladesh Army ensured that an interim government would be established soon.
In regards to financial support given to Bangladesh, US State Department Spokesperson, Matthew Miller says, “With respect to financial support in fiscal year 2023 the United States provided over 212 million dollars in bilateral economic development and health assistance to Bangladesh…We would like to see them continue because they’re important to our relationship with the people of Bangladesh…We have provided nearly 2 billion dollars in humanitarian assistance to support Rohingya refugees since August of 2017”.

On Sunday, violent clashes during student protests against quota reforms in Bangladesh resulted in at least 98 deaths. According to police and doctors, the overall death toll has reached at least 300, AFP reported.
In response to the escalating unrest and renewed student demands for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, India has advised its citizens to avoid travel to Bangladesh until further notice.
