Sheikh Hasina To Return To Bangladesh For Elections, Says Son

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to Bangladesh once the new caretaker government decides to hold elections, according to her son.

Hasina fled to India on Monday following weeks of deadly protests that compelled her to step down. On Thursday, a caretaker government led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in to oversee the upcoming elections.

In an interview with the Times of India, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who resides in the US, stated, “Currently, she (Hasina) is in India. She will return to Bangladesh as soon as the interim government announces the election date.”

Hasina’s Awami League party does not feature in the interim government, following a student-led uprising against the long-time former prime minister whose exit came after nationwide violence killed about 300 people and injured thousands.

She is currently staying in a secure location in the New Delhi area. Indian media have reported that she intends to seek asylum in Britain, though the British Home Office has not commented on this.

On Thursday, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned that he had discussed the situation in Bangladesh with his British counterpart but did not disclose any specifics.

Joy said that he will not refrain from joining politics if that is needed. “I am sure the Awami League will take part in the election and we might even win,” he said.
