World Soil Day 2022: Importance and Significance.

World Soil Day is observed on 5th December everywhere. The goal of the day is to spread awareness on the declining health of soil.

Soil is basically one of the most important parts of our ecosystem. All the Flora in any region requires soil to sustain. Trees and plants are important for human life to sustain. Our food grows on soil and thus, we automatically depend on it. However, over the last few decades, the soil health has been declining because of rising deforestation and pollution. Thus, World Soil Day is important to spread awareness for the same.

History of World Soil Day:

A global day to appreciate soil has been in demand by international organizations since 2002, Thailand serving as their leader. At the 68th UN General Assembly, which got underway on September 17, 2013, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supported them. They also asked that the day be made official.

The General Assembly declared December 5, 2014, as the inaugural International Day for Soil. The date falls on H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s formal birthday, the monarch of Thailand. He had given the occasion his formal approval.

Since then, FAO does campaigns with various soil health-related themes each year to commemorate the day.

“Soils, where food begins” will be the focus of World Soil Day in 2022.

“The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being. This is by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, increasing soil awareness and encouraging societies to improve soil health,” FAO stated.

People can join an online ceremony today at 6:15 PM IST. At the ceremony, experts will release the global soil data and soil Atlas.

Significance of World Soil Day:

It is important to have a day to spread awareness about the importance of soil. We don’t often think about how important soil is and take it for granted. Rising pollution and deforestation is leading to soil quality decreasing. This will not only lead to decrease in flora but also food quality. Therefore, it is important to understand the importance of soil and conserve it.
