WhatsApp is gearing up to combat the spread of misinformation with a new reverse image search feature. Initially spotted in the WhatsApp Android beta, the feature has now been identified in the WhatsApp Web Beta by WABetaInfo.
This functionality will allow users to verify the authenticity of an image shared with them by utilizing Google’s reverse image search. The feature aims to help users determine whether an image has been edited, manipulated, or presented out of context.
A notable advantage is that users won’t need to download the image onto their device. WhatsApp will introduce a shortcut within the web application to initiate the reverse image search directly.
When users choose the option to search for an image on the web, the application will upload the image to Google (with user consent) and open the default browser to perform the reverse image search. Importantly, the entire process will be handled by Google, and WhatsApp will not access the image content, ensuring user privacy.

WhatsApp Enhances Document Scanning on iOS
In addition to the reverse image search feature, the application recently rolled out an in-app document scanning capability for iOS users. This feature, available in the latest update (version 24.25.80), enables users to scan documents directly within the app’s document-sharing menu.
This new tool eliminates the need for external scanning apps, making document sharing more convenient for users on the go. The document-scanning option activates the device’s camera, allowing users to capture and preview scans. The app also detects margins automatically, but users can manually adjust them for precise framing and clarity.
These features highlight WhatsApp’s efforts to evolve into a more comprehensive platform, combining communication, document management, and tools to curb misinformation.
