Woody Allen feels ‘romance of filmmaking is gone’

Woody Allen, an American filmmaker, is uncertain about his desire to continue creating movies as he senses that the “romance of filmmaking is gone”. In a recent interview when he was asked about his latest film Coup de Chance not getting a release everywhere in the world, he said, “It doesn’t matter to me whether I get distributed here or not. Once I make it, I don’t follow it anymore. Distribution is no longer what it was. Now distribution is two weeks in a cinema… And then that’s it. I mean, Annie Hall played in movie houses in New York for a little bit over a year.”

He added, “It’d be in one theatre for six, seven months, and then somebody would pick it up and it would hang around another few months. The whole business has changed, and not in an appealing way. All the romance of filmmaking is gone.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Woody Allen’s Coup de Chance was to be released in the US on April 5. This would be followed by a digital/VOD release on April 12 following its debut at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023.

This is Woody Allen’s 50th film

Coup de Chance is Woody Allen’s 50th feature.

This is not the first instance where Woody Allen has pondered his future in the realm of filmmaking. Back in 2022, he highlighted that “a lot of the thrill is gone” due to the emergence of OTT platforms.

He continues to be “on the fence” about it as he said, “I don’t want to have to go out to raise money. I find that a pain in the neck. But if someone shows up and calls in and says we want to back the film, then I would seriously consider it. I would probably not have the willpower to say no because I have so many ideas.”

Allegations of sexual abuse against Woody Allen

Woody Allen has faced challenges with his fame, experiencing a decrease in popularity amidst the #MeToo movement and renewed allegations of sexual abuse from his adopted stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow. Allen has consistently denied these accusations, and he was not charged by the Connecticut state’s attorney after a 1993 investigation.
