‘This is Arvind Kejriwal’s chair’: Atishi takes charge as Delhi CM with an empty chair beside her

Atishi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader took charge as the eighth Chief Minister of Delhi on September 23, 2024, Monday after taking the oath of office on September 21, 2024, Saturday. Refusing to sit on the chair used by her predecessor Arvind Kejriwal, Ms. Atishi chose to sit on a different chair. “This is Delhi’s Chief Minister’s chair, this chair is Arvind Kejriwal ji’s,“ she said after taking charge at the Delhi Secretariat.

“Today, I carry the same burden as Bharat did. Just as he placed Lord Ram’s sandals on the throne and ruled, I will govern Delhi for the next four months with the same spirit,” she said.

“This chair belongs to Arvind Kejriwal, and I am certain that in the February elections, the people of Delhi will once again elect him as their Chief Minister. Until then, this chair will remain in this office, waiting for him to return,” she added.

Ms. Atishi, the third and the youngest woman Chief Minister of Delhi, has retained the 13 portfolios she held in the Kejriwal government, including those of education, revenue, finance, power and PWD.
