Bibek Debroy, the chairman of Prime Minister’s economic advisory council (EAC-PM) and a top economist, passed away on Friday morning. He was 69.He was admitted to AIIMS.
“Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth,” PM Narendra Modi wrote on X.
He also posted a photo of himself with Bibek Debroy.Bibek Debroy received his education at Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur, Presidency College in Kolkata, the Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge.
His professional background includes positions at Presidency College in Kolkata, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi, and serving as the director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project focused on legal reforms.

Who was Bibek Debroy?
Bibek Debroy is a prominent Indian economist, author, and scholar recognized for his contributions to economic policy and Sanskrit literature. He has significantly influenced India’s economic strategies.
With expertise in areas such as macroeconomics, public finance, and infrastructure, Debroy has published widely on economic reforms, governance, and the Indian railways.
He is also noted for translating classical Sanskrit texts, including the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, making ancient Indian wisdom accessible to contemporary readers.
Additionally, he served as a member of NITI Aayog until June 5, 2019, and has contributed as a consulting editor for several newspapers.
