Delhi CM Speculation: Swearing-in likely on February 19 or 20, says BJP leader; CM candidate yet to be revealed

The much-awaited swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP-led government in Delhi is expected on February 19 or 20, a party leader stated on Friday, as speculation continues over the chief ministerial choice.

BJP leaders emphasized that the new administration will prioritize clean drinking water supply, enhanced civic infrastructure, and other key issues.

“The new government will start working around February 19-20,” news agency PTI quoted as saying Rajouri Garden MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who is considered a contender for the post of chief minister or a ministerial berth.

The newly elected MLA stated that observers for the BJP legislature party meeting would be appointed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from his France and US visit. PM Modi arrived in Delhi on Friday night after concluding his two-nation tour.

Delhi CM Speculation

Newly elected BJP MLAs reportedly dismissed any competition for the chief minister’s post, calling such discussions mere media speculation.

“There is no race for the post of Delhi chief minister. In our party the CM or the leader of the legislature party is elected in a meeting of the MLAs,” the report quoted as saying second-time MLA from Laxmi Nagar seat Abhay Verma.

Abhay Verma, a Purvanchali, is also among the names being considered as a prospective candidate for the top post in the Delhi government.

“We have come to serve the people and are now thinking about addressing issues like development, clean water supply and clean air for the people as well as how to free the Yamuna from pollution,” Verma said.

BJP’s Priorities: Ayushman Bharat, Clean Water, and Pollution Control

BJP MLAs affirmed that, in line with the Prime Minister’s commitment, the Ayushman Bharat health scheme, previously stalled by the AAP government, will be implemented in Delhi during the first meeting of the new Cabinet. The Prime Minister has already confirmed that the scheme will be rolled out as a priority.

Six-time MLA Mohan Singh Bisht stated that the new Chief Minister of Delhi will be selected from the 48 BJP legislators.

Additionally, Mustafabad MLA reiterated his proposal to rename the minority-dominated constituency to “Shiv Vihar” or “Shiv Puri,” emphasizing the need to respect public sentiment given the demographic composition of 42% minorities and 58% Hindus.

Bisht further assured that the BJP government will work to reduce Yamuna pollution by setting up sewage treatment plants (STPs) to manage the 28 major drains flowing into the river.
