Donald Trump announces RFK Jr as US health secretary

On Thursday, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

In his announcement, Trump expressed strong support for Kennedy’s appointment, stating, “I am excited to appoint Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. For far too long, Americans have suffered under the influence of the industrial food complex and pharmaceutical companies that have spread misinformation, deception, and disinformation regarding public health.”

Kennedy, however, is a polarizing figure in the health sector, particularly known for his opposition to vaccines. A 2019 study revealed that his organization was one of the primary financial backers of Facebook ads that spread vaccine-related misinformation.

If confirmed, Kennedy would be responsible for overseeing major health agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
