The senior officer reported that a search operation was launched in the village yesterday after receiving intelligence that three to four terrorists were hiding there. As the joint security team approached, the terrorists opened fire.
During the ensuing gunfight, Head Constable Bashir Ahmed was critically injured but succeeded in killing one of the terrorists before he succumbed to his injuries. The area has now been cordoned off, and efforts to eliminate the remaining terrorists are ongoing, according to the officer.
The senior police officer added that operations against terrorists will continue as the Union Territory holds its first Assembly election since its special status was revoked in 2019.
“We are getting continuous information about terrorists and subsequently conducting operations with an endeavour to neutralise them as soon as possible,” he said.
He said adequate security arrangements are in place in all poll-bound areas to ensure a violence-free third phase of voting.
