Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday, November 11, 2024.
Justice Khanna succeeds Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who retired on Sunday, November 10, 2024. His tenure as Chief Justice will continue until May 13, 2025.
The Centre officially announced Justice Khanna’s appointment on October 24, following the recommendation of Chief Justice Chandrachud on October 16. On his final working day as CJI, Friday, November 8, 2024, Justice Chandrachud received a heartfelt farewell from colleagues, lawyers, and staff from both the Supreme Court and the high courts.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna background
Appointed to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, Justice Khanna has been part of several significant rulings, including upholding the integrity of EVMs, striking down the electoral bonds scheme, affirming the abrogation of Article 370, and granting interim bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
A third-generation lawyer, Justice Khanna’s legal career was preceded by his service on the Delhi High Court. He is committed to reducing case backlogs and expediting the delivery of justice.
Justice Khanna hails from a distinguished Delhi family—his father, Justice Dev Raj Khanna, was a former judge of the Delhi High Court, and his uncle, Justice H.R. Khanna, served as a prominent Supreme Court judge.
