India has initiated “Operation Sindhu” to evacuate its citizens from Iran amid rising tensions with Israel. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Tuesday that 110 Indian students were successfully evacuated from northern Iran and transported to Armenia.
A special flight carrying the evacuees departed from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, at 2:55 PM local time on 18 June. The flight is expected to arrive in Delhi in the early hours of 19 June, the MEA confirmed in an official release.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, the students—primarily from Urmia University of Medical Sciences—include 90 individuals from Kashmir.
India has engaged with Armenia, a neighboring country of Iran, to facilitate the evacuation, as its diplomatic relations with other neighboring nations—Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan—remain strained, particularly following Operation Sindoor, during which Ankara and Baku appeared to align with Islamabad.
The MEA stated that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is maintaining constant contact with the Indian community to provide necessary support. Both the embassy and the MEA have activated emergency helplines, and a 24×7 control room has been established at the ministry in light of the ongoing regional developments.
