Central rule was implemented in Jammu and Kashmir on October 31, 2019, after the formal reorganization of the former state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, was passed by Parliament on August 5, 2019, alongside the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, which had granted special status to the former state.
Before October 31, 2019, central rule had been in effect in the former state since June 2017, following the resignation of then-chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, after the BJP withdrew its support for the PDP-led government.
