‘Nirbhaya case led to changes, but…’: Former CJI Chandrachud on Pune bus rape case

Pune Bus Rape Case: As the investigation into the alleged rape of a woman inside a bus at Pune’s Swargate depot continues, demands for the harshest punishment for the absconding accused are intensifying. Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has also echoed similar calls for justice.

Amid rising pressure from the opposition, which has compared the incident to the 2012 Delhi Nirbhaya gang rape case, police are making urgent efforts to solve the case. Multiple teams have been formed to track down the accused, Dattatray Ramdas Gade (37), a history-sheeter who has been on the run since the crime occurred on a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus early Tuesday morning.

A reward of ₹1 lakh has been announced for anyone providing information on his whereabouts, according to Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar, as reported by news agency PTI.

DY Chandrachud’s Statement on the Pune bus Rape Case

Speaking on Thursday, former CJI DY Chandrachud remarked that although significant legal reforms followed the Nirbhaya case, laws alone cannot prevent such incidents. He emphasized that society holds a crucial responsibility in preventing crimes, alongside the need for effective enforcement of existing laws.

“Laws made for women should be implemented properly. Women should feel safe wherever they go. It is important that in such cases, there should be proper investigation, strong action, quick trial and punishment. The legal system and the police have a big responsibility,” DY Chandrachud said.

Pune bus rape case incident

Swargate, located in Pune city, is one of the largest bus depots operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

According to the survivor, she was waiting for a bus to Phaltan in Satara district at one of the platforms around 5:45 am on Tuesday when a man approached her. Addressing her as “didi” (sister), he informed her that the bus to Satara was arriving at a different platform.

He led her to an empty Shiv Shahi AC bus parked elsewhere on the station premises. Although she was hesitant to board due to the lack of interior lighting, the man assured her it was the correct bus. Once inside, he followed her, sexually assaulted her, and then fled the scene. The woman, who works in the medical field, later reported the incident to the police.
