Mahakumbh Fire: Cylinder Explosion Triggers Massive Blaze in Prayagraj, 18 Tents Destroyed

Mahakumbh fire: A major fire broke out at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, though there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The fire occurred in Sector 19 of the Mahakumbh Tent City and was caused by an explosion of cooking cylinders, according to the police.

Kumbh Mela’s chief fire officer, Pramod Sharma, stated that 15 fire tenders were deployed to control the blaze, which spread to 18 tents.

Prayagraj District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar informed ANI that the fire started around 4:30 pm in the Gita Press tent. “There have been no reports of any casualties. The situation is under control,” he said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took note of the incident, visited the site, and spoke with officials and firefighting teams.

Leaders on Mahakumbh fire

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also contacted Adityanath to inquire about the situation, sources said. Uttar Pradesh Minister AK Sharma told ANI that the fire was extinguished within 20 minutes.

“There has been no loss of lives in the incident and for that, I thank Ma Ganga, Triveni and Lete Hanuman ji. Our police team and NDRF are at the spot,” he said.

In a post on X, the Samajwadi Party also expressed its grief over the incident and asked the government to run relief and rescue operations at a fast pace.

“The party expresses sorrow over the incident and prays for the safety of all devotees. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure security, control the fire, and prevent such incidents in the future,” Samajwadi Party spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chaand told PTI. “The party believes the incident is tragic and urges the government to provide necessary facilities for the devotees at the Kumbh.”

Mahakumbh 2025

The Maha Kumbh commenced on January 13 and will run until February 26. Devotees from across India and around the world have been embracing the spiritual essence of the sacred confluence. In just the first six days of the Mahakumbh, over 7 crore devotees and esteemed seers have bathed in the holy waters of the Triveni Sangam.

The Uttar Pradesh government projects that more than 45 crore people will participate in the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela.
