Northeast Flood Crisis Deepens; Death Toll Climbs to 36, Over 5.5 Lakh Affected

The situation Northeast flood in India remained dire on Monday (June 2, 2025), as heavy rainfall continued to wreak havoc, triggering widespread floods and landslides. The death toll rose to 36, and more than 5.5 lakh people were affected across multiple states.

Assam: 11 Dead, Over 5.35 Lakh Affected

Assam has been the worst-hit, with 11 reported deaths. Over 5.35 lakh people across 22 districts are impacted as 15 rivers overflow, according to an official bulletin. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood-ravaged Lakhimpur and assured all possible support. Road, rail, and ferry services remain disrupted due to continued rainfall.

Sikkim: Landslides Prompt Air Evacuations

In Sikkim, 34 individuals, including injured army personnel, their families, and stranded tourists, were rescued by MI-17 V5 helicopters from landslide-hit Chhaten in North Sikkim. Three army personnel were confirmed dead and six remain missing after a landslide struck a military camp in Mangan district on Sunday evening.

Since May 29, persistent rain has caused extensive landslides in the district, damaging infrastructure and severing key routes to popular tourist destinations such as Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar, and Zero Point. Chief Secretary R. Telang led a high-level meeting to coordinate emergency response and restore essential services.

Manipur: Over 56,000 Affected by Flash Floods

In Manipur, flash floods caused by overflowing rivers and breached embankments have affected 56,516 people. At least 10,477 houses were damaged, and 57 relief camps have been established—most notably in Imphal East, the state’s worst-hit district.

Arunachal Pradesh: Death Toll Rises to 10

Arunachal Pradesh reported one more death in Lohit district, bringing the toll to 10. Heavy rains have affected 938 residents across 156 villages in 23 districts. Major rivers and tributaries are flowing above danger levels, leading to flood and landslide reports in districts including West Kameng, Papum Pare, and Dibang Valley. Governor Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik (Retd) extended condolences and urged residents to stay alert.

Tripura: Situation Improves but 10,000 Still in Relief Camps

While the floodwaters have started to recede in Tripura, over 10,000 people remain sheltered in government relief camps. A total of 66 camps are operational, with West Tripura hosting the majority. Disaster Management in-charge Sarat Das noted that water levels are dropping, and the overall situation is gradually stabilizing.

Mizoram: Schools Shut Amid Rain-Induced Calamities

In Mizoram, schools remained closed due to landslides, mudslides, rockfalls, and widespread waterlogging. So far, five fatalities—including three Myanmarese refugees—have been reported since heavy rains began on May 24. Schools had already been shut on May 29 and 30.

Uttarakhand Offers Support

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke with his counterparts in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura to assess the situation and expressed solidarity with the affected states. He assured that Uttarakhand would extend all possible support. On June 2, Mr. Dhami also announced an increase in the ex-gratia for families of fallen soldiers from ₹10 lakh to ₹50 lakh.
