Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that Mohammad Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza and younger brother of the group’s top commander Yahya Sinwar, has been killed.
This development comes seven months after Yahya Sinwar—widely regarded as the mastermind of the October 7 attack—was fatally shot in the head during a firefight with Israeli trainee soldiers in Rafah, Gaza. His death followed over a year of pursuit by Israeli intelligence and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Following Yahya’s death, Mohammad Sinwar assumed leadership of the Palestinian militant group in Gaza.

How Was Mohammad Sinwar Killed?
According to Israeli media, Mohammad Sinwar was killed on May 13 in an Israeli airstrike targeting a Hamas command hub in southern Gaza. The IDF reportedly dropped a large number of bombs on a tunnel complex beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, where Sinwar was believed to be hiding.
The military claimed the underground site served as a command and control center for Hamas. The attack, described as one of the heaviest in recent weeks, caused significant destruction. Videos from the scene showed thick smoke rising from the hospital area, with widespread damage to nearby buildings.
Although the IDF insisted the operation targeted high-level militants, the strike has raised serious concerns among humanitarian groups. Medical personnel on site called the aftermath “catastrophic,” with numerous bodies trapped under debris and uncertainty over the number of civilian casualties.
