AR Rahman Joins Ed Sheeran in Chennai for ‘Shape of You X Urvasi’—But a Faulty Mic Almost Ruins the Moment

UK singer Ed Sheeran is bringing his ‘Mathematics’ tour to India, and on Wednesday, he took the stage in Chennai for a special performance. Joining him as a surprise guest was none other than Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman. The duo delivered a unique mashup of Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’ and Rahman’s iconic ‘Urvasi’, creating a magical moment—until a microphone glitch threatened to spoil the vibe.

Following the concert, Sheeran shared a video on Instagram featuring Rahman’s grand entry. “Make some noise for AR Rahman!” he shouted, as the crowd erupted in cheers. Rahman, dressed in his signature all-black outfit with sunglasses, joined in the performance. However, a technical issue with his mic left him barely audible for most of the song. Sheeran quickly stepped in to carry the performance, while Rahman vocalized parts of ‘Urvasi’. Despite the hiccup, fans cheered them on enthusiastically.

The collaboration received an outpouring of love on social media. “Goddamn, I’ll say it again—Aadhar Card for Ed Bhai!” one fan joked. Another wrote, “Witnessed this iconic moment live. This one’s for the history books!” Some even highlighted the global impact of Rahman’s presence, with a comment reading, “That aura when a global artist says the name AR Rahman.”

However, not everyone was completely satisfied. A few fans felt the performance could have been better polished. One tweet in Tamil read, “Irundhalum nalla practice pani irukalam” (Even then, they could have practiced well).

Ed Sheeran’s India Tour

Before his Chennai concert, Sheeran met Rahman and his son, singer A R Ameen. Ameen later shared a series of Instagram photos featuring the trio, including one where Sheeran snapped a picture of Rahman working in his studio.

Sheeran also posted a heartwarming clip of himself performing *Perfect* with the choir at Rahman’s KM College of Music & Technology. “Singing ‘Perfect’ with the amazing choir at @kmmcchennai today, wowsers,” he captioned the video.

Beyond music, Sheeran has been embracing Indian culture. A fan club shared a viral video of him receiving a head massage in Chennai, where he jokingly quipped, “This is abuse.”

The singer-songwriter will conclude the India leg of his tour with a performance in Delhi-NCR on February 15, organized by AEG Presents Asia and BookMyShow Live.
